One Computer: Controlled Chaos??
Integrating technology into your curriculum with just one computer
is a challenge. But it can be done and it’s worth it!
Classroom management can be a big issue. Remember if your students
are working on something valuable, it’s ok to let them opt
out of what the rest of the class is working on. (Most kids can
multi-task anyway and will still keep up with you while they’re
working!)
Plan projects where the computer activity is just one aspect of
the whole. Have groups rotate through working on the computer, going
to the library to do research, discussing with the teacher, and
working independently on their project assignments. But before giving
students this kind of freedom, train them to understand their responsibilities.
If you do, you’ll listen to the chaos and realize the noise
is from their excitement about learning, not from misbehavior.
What to do with your precious computer:
- Teachers: worksheets, tests, handouts, email, parent communication,
grades, awards
- Presentation: lesson introductions, student presentations,
internet sharing, concept demonstrations
- Group Projects: standards and subject- area based, provide
clear expectations to students, must be assessed, can include
multimedia, Internet, etc.
- Individual Work station: research, enrichment, remediation
