Activity Description:
Objective:
The object of this activity is to create a table
on the computer then fill in the cells (or boxes)
with different colored patterns. Your table will have
16 cells and you will fill in these cells with 4 different
colored patterns. The trick is that you must not let
the same pattern touch itself. You cannot have two
cells next to each other or diagonal to each other
with the same colored pattern.
Using the Table shortcut button,
create a 4 x 4 table.
Next you will want to make your cells larger.
Under Table in the menu bar
select Cell Height and Width.
This window will appear:
Click the Row tab. In the
Height of rows 1-4: change
it to Exactly by clicking on
the small triangle.
In the At: box change the
number to be 102 pt.
Now you need to create your colored patterns.
You will be creating 4 different colored patterns
for this activity. Remember, as you are doing
this, no two neighboring cells can have the
same colored pattern.
Right click on the first cell that you want to
color. Select Borders and Shading
.from the pop-up menu. A window like this one will
appear.
Click on the Shading tab.
Under Fill select the color that
you want.
Under Patterns you can select
the style you want by clicking on the small triangle
at the end of the Style: box and scrolling down to
your choice. (Hint: Remember what you have selected
so you can repeat it later.)
In the Apply to: box, select Cell.
Click OK.
Right click in the next cell that you want to color.
Repeat steps 7 through 11 using the same color and
pattern style as the first cell. Remember, you cannot
have two cells with the same colored patterns style
touching.
After you have the first 4 cells done, create a
new colored pattern and fill in 4 more cells. Again,
remembering that neighboring cells cannot have the
same colored pattern.
Continue with two more colored patterns filling
in the remaining 8 cells.
Print your table.
When you are finished, go to File
and select Exit. Don’t save
your changes.
