New Year's Celebrations

Brief Overview:
This unit teaches children how different groups of people celebrate the New Year. Students use the internet to research, compare and contrast holiday customs from around the world.

Lesson Plan
Goals:
- Students will be able to define "custom" and will give an example of a custom they practice at home.
- Students will be able to find information about a different culture using the internet.
- Students will be able to find information about a specific culture group using the internet.
- Students will use the knowledge they have learned about their custom group and create a "project" showing that knowledge.
- Students will celebrate what they have learned about their culture group.
Lesson:

- Start with lesson for Day One on the New Year's Customs website http://web.buddyproject.org/web009/web009/dayone.html Students will be able to define "custom" and will give an example of a custom they practice at home.
- On Day Two of the unit students will be able to find information about a different culture using the internet. http://web.buddyproject.org/web009/web009/daytwo.html
- During Day Three students will research a specific culture using the internet. http://web.buddyproject.org/web009/web009/daythree.html
- Day Four will let the students use the knowledge they have learned about their custom group to create a "project" showing that knowledge. http://web.buddyproject.org/web009/web009/dayfour.html

Home Connections:
During the unit have the children make a poster representing how their family celebrates the New Year. Let students share their poster on Day Five.
