Olympic Odyssey
Take a pretend trip to the 2002 Winter Olympics Games in Salt Lake City, Utah this February. What would such an adventure cost? Begin in a spreadsheet by brainstorming a list of all the costs that would be involved for a 2 day, one night trip. (airtravel, hotel, meals, car, taxi, or bus travel, tickets for the events, souvenirs, etc.). Place those items down column A and in column B place a cost. You can do your research for cost by calling airlines, hotels, going online, and by estimating.
What events would you want to see most in your 2 days? To find out the event schedules and cost go to The Official Site for 2002 Winter Olympics and click on schedules. Once you have come up with all your expenses and found out what the actual cost is, come up with a total by using the sum formula at the bottom of column B.
Challenge: What would it cost to take your whole family? Multiply the total amount by the number of family members? What would it cost to take your whole class or your whole school? Do you think there is any way to decrease the cost of the trip (i.e. drive vs. fly, stay in a different hotel, etc.)? Do a little more research to see if you can find a better price for one of your expenses and see how that changes all of your totals. Have fun with this Olympic dream and enjoy watching the events you chose on the television-- for free!
