Stained Glass Subtraction

Create a piece of art on your computer that you and a friend can use as a fun way to practice your subtraction facts. Begin in a drawing or painting program by creating a winter scene using the pencil or line tool. Start with a large box border and then draw in the details. Within areas of your drawing where the space is large, break it up by drawing extra lines or sections through it just like stained glass. One tip is to make sure that your lines completely connect so that when you fill in each section with "paint" it will not spill to other sections. Once your drawing is complete, have fun filling in the spaces with "paint," while using only 5-8 colors total. Once all your colors are set and your stained glass looks beautiful you are now ready to create the "key" for your stained glass that you or someone else can use later for practice and fun. For each color choose a number "answer" and record that in a KEY box at the bottom of your drawing. Now within each individual section of your drawing, use the text tool to write in a subtraction fact where the answer corresponds to the correct color in the key. For instance, if the whole sky is blue, and your key says that "blue=5" then you would place "10-5", "6-1", "8-3", etc in each of the sky sections. Once each section has a subtraction fact placed in it you can now take a step backward and fill in each space with white again. Your stained glass is ready for you to exchange with a friend or family member for them to try out their mathematic and artistic talents!
