2006 "Techy" Time Capsule
Want to capture all of the fun and exciting memories of the year and preserve it for years to come? Use your computer to create a CD of files that summarizes all that took place in the year 2006. Create a slideshow that includes photos, home movies, and notes summarizing each month of the year. Include digital photo files, movie clips, favorite music clips (but honor copyright restrictions), and word processing files containing creative writing or even journal entries from each member of the family. Also consider drawings or paintings that you created digitally or can scan? Once all of your files are created and gathered in a folder, copy them to a CD and burn it. Put a label on it: 2006 Time Capsule: Don't open until … (You pick the date!) It may be fun to make copies for family members and enclose them with holiday cards this year. What a snazzy and "techy" way to make a memory!

Over the River and Through the Woods
Is that how you get to Grandmother's House? Practice your writing skills by typing, in a word processor, directions to a special family member's house that you usually visit for a holiday celebration. Be sure to include cardinal directions (N, S, E, W), approximate miles, and any special landmarks that are helpful. You can use a map, have Mom or Dad assist (since they are the usual drivers) or call the person, whose house you plan to visit, to obtain additional and accurate information. Once your directions are complete compare them by using the site listed below. How are your directions similar? Are there any differences? Does MAPQUEST give you landmarks? What directions do you most prefer to use? Why? Finally, road test your directions the next time you travel. Off you go!

Personalized Phonetic Alphabet
Have you ever read a number or word to someone on the phone, had to repeat it for clarity and they STILL heard it wrong? That is why some special phonetic alphabets were invented! Call signs are used everyday by military and public services such as the police and firefighters so that the important information they are communicating does not get confused. It can also be helpful for us too! Have fun learning a "real" phonetic alphabet and then see if you can create a personalized one of your own. Use a spreadsheet to record and display your information. Column A: the Letters (A-Z), Column B: the phonetic word, Column C: how to pronounce the word, Column D: your personalized word for that letter, and Column E: the reason you chose the word.
Search the internet to find a phonetic alphabet. There are even some pages that compare several different ones such as the site listed below. This one may help give you a few more ideas. Check out the link to the Silent Alphabet! Ha! Once you are finished with your new list, check it over and print it out. When do you think you might use this with your family? Can you think of a game you could make out of it? Have fun communicating in this different, yet clear way!
An extra challenge: Research the history of these phonetic alphabets? When were they created and why?
